Grant Opportunity: The National Science Foundation's Major Research Instrumentation Program funds the acquisition or development of multi-user science and engineering research or research training instrumentation that would otherwise be too costly or not appropriate for funding under other NSF programs.
Grant Period: The grant period is up to three years for acquisition proposals and up to five years for development proposals.
Eligibility: Higher education institutions acting on behalf of faculty members or not-for-profits advancing scientific or engineering research or consortia thereof are eligible to apply.
For-profit commercial organizations, such as small businesses with capabilities in scientific or engineering and education, may be eligible for development support through subcontracts with submitting organizations; however, they may not submit proposals.
Grant Amount: An MRI proposal may request up to $4 million. Each submitting organization may submit in either Track 1 or Track 2 as specified below.
- Track 1: Track 1 MRI proposals are those that request funds from NSF greater than or equal to $100,0001 and less than $1,000,000.
- Track 2: Track 2 MRI proposals are those that request funds from NSF greater than or equal to $1,000,000 up to and including $4,000,000.

- Submission Window Dates: January 01, 2019 - January 22, 2019 (January 1 - January 19, Annually Thereafter)
- Campuses or organizations that plan to submit a proposal through the Sponsored Projects Office of other campuses or organizations should contact NSF to discuss eligibility least six weeks before submitting a proposal.
