COVID-19 Impact on Higher Education: Community Colleges

The biggest impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has been the sharp increase of Americans losing their jobs; estimates are that more than 30 million are now unemployed. As with the economic downturn of 2009, community colleges are preparing for upsurge in enrollments in the 2020-2021 academic year. Community colleges have long been the place where seasoned workers and high school graduates gravitate towards to fill essential professions currently in high demand such as healthcare.

Newly graduated high school students are considering community college in the Fall for a variety of reasons; the cost of attendance and tuition are significantly less than four-year institutions, community colleges offer more flexibility with course scheduling to accommodate part-time students working jobs, and many already have solid IT infrastructures to adjust to distance learning. With states like New York cancelling end-of-year Regents exams, high school graduates are guaranteed enrollment without exam scores, and other assessments such as SAT and ACT standardized tests.
