Grant opportunity: In order to expand educational opportunities for underserved students, the New York State Education Department's Charter Schools Program (CSP) Start-Up Grant program provides funding for the planning, program design, and implementation of new charter schools.
Eligibility: Charter school education corporations authorized by the Board of Regents or the SUNY Board of Trustees are eligible to apply.
Grant Amount and Grant Period: Applicants may apply for a base award of $1,500,000 over a three-year grant period. An additional $500,000 can also be requested for a total of $2,000,000 if the applicant can demonstrate it meets one or more of the following criteria:
- The school is specifically designed to meet the learning needs and raise the achievement of students with disabilities or English Language Learners
- The school is a high school whose mission is specific to the needs of over-age and undercredited students
- The school will serve students who are at-risk of academic failure because they reside in a community that is served by a persistently low-achieving school
- The school will provide a distinctive educational option for students in rural communities with limited educational options
- The school’s program will promote racial, ethnic, and linguistic diversity
