New York State is one of the most diverse states in the country. With the range of experiences that students bring to the classroom, including diverse racial, educational, and economic backgrounds, learning abilities, sexual orientations/gender identities, and linguistic skills, it is essential for educators to develop culturally responsive-sustaining (CR-S) environments where all students feel included, necessary, and valued. NYSED recently published a report to guide educators through the process of developing and implementing curriculum and practices that reflect the values of CR-S. Click here to download a copy of the full report.
The CR-S framework was developed to support teachers and administrators to implement policies that ensure all students are educated effectively and equitably by affirming students’ cultural identities and develop students’ abilities to connect across lines of difference.
CR-S education is grounded in four core principles
- Welcoming & affirming environment where all students feel safe and where their identities are positively represented and reflected
- High expectations & rigorous instruction that stress critical reasoning and leverages a growth mindset that also accounts for the different ways that students learn
- Inclusive curriculum & assessment that empowers students to be agents of social change while expanding their critical perspective beyond the scope of their own experiences
- Ongoing professional learning for teachers, administrators, and other members that is rooted in the idea that teaching is an adaptive process requiring on-going reexamination
BRI’s 2020-2021 Professional Development catalog includes multiple sessions designed for educators at all levels to develop CR-S principles into their own school communities. Contact us today to learn more.
