Grant Opportunity: In order to help farmers and small food processors prepare for and adapt to new food safety requirements, the National Institute of Food and Agriculture’s Food Safety Outreach Program provides funding for organizations, institutions of higher education, extensions, and cooperatives to develop outreach, education, training, and technical assistance projects around food safety.
Grants are administered in the following categories:

Community Outreach Project grants will support the development of new food safety education and outreach programs in local communities as well as the expansion of existing programs that address the needs of small, local audiences.

Collaborative Education and Training Project grants will support the expansion and development of multi-county, state-wide or multi-state food safety education and outreach programs that are well established locally.

Regional Center Project grants will support the development of infrastructure that ensures Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) best practices are translated to a national audience. Regional Centers will also focus on implementing technical assistance to farmers, processors, and vendors in their respective regions.

Technical Assistance – Grant Writing Skills Projects grants will support the development and refinement of grant writing skills and provide grant writing resources for entities that support individuals or groups that are led by and directly interact with underserved populations.
Eligibility: Eligible applicants include Cooperative Extension Services for U.S. states or territories, nongovernmental/ community-based organizations representing owners and operators of farms, small food processors, or small fruit and vegetable merchant wholesalers, institutions of higher education, Federal, State, local, or tribal agencies, or a combination of the above.
Grant Amount and Grant Period: Award amounts and grant periods will vary depending on the project category.

Community Outreach Project awards will range between $80,000 and $150,000 with an optional $150,000 which may be requested for Collaborative Engagement Supplements. The grant period for Community Outreach Project awards is two years.

Collaborative Education and Training Project awards will range between $200,000 and $400,000 with an optional $150,000 which may be requested for Collaborative Engagement Supplements. The grant period for this category is three years.

Regional Center Projects awards will be funded at up to $800,000 each with an additional $200,000 awarded to one Lead Regional Center. The grant period for this category is 3 years.

Technical Assistance-Grant Writing Skills Project awards will range between $75,000 and $150,000 with an optional $150,000 which may be requested for Collaborative Engagement Supplements. The grant period for this category is 3 years.
