Grant Opportunity: The National Science Foundation's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) / Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Program provides funding for small businesses and startups with the goal of moving scientific and technological innovation out from the lab and into the market as products and services with commercial potential and/or societal benefit. SBIR and STTR funding will go into research and development of deep technologies, based on discoveries in fundamental science and engineering, for societal and economic impact. STTR Phase I projects must also partner with a research institution such as colleges, universities, national laboratories, and from other research sites.

SBIR/ STTR grants are distributed in two phases.

Eligibility: Applicants must receive an invitation to submit a full NSF SBIR/STTR Phase I proposal after approval through the NSF SBIR/STTR Phase I Project Pitch program. Small businesses consisting of less than 500 employees (including affiliates) are eligible to submit a project pitch.

Phase II projects are open only to small businesses that have received a Phase I SBIR or STTR Award in the past six to 24 months.

Grant Amount and Grant Period: Phase I proposals may request up to $275,000 for a grant period between 6 - 12 months. Phase II proposals may request up to $1,000,000. The grant period for Phase II projects are typically 24 months; however, there is flexibility allowed depending on circumstances and the scope of the project.
