Grant Opportunity: The National Endowment for the Humanities's Research and Development Program funds projects that address challenges to preserving or providing access to cultural heritage collections.

Grants are provided in two tiers.

Tier I grants are planning and basic research grants that support preliminary work for large-scale research and development projects. Tier I grants also support stand-alone research projects.

Tier II grants are advanced implementation grants that support the development of standards and practices for preserving and creating access to collections as well as the implementation of applied research addressing preservation and accessibility issues.

Both Tier I and Tier II projects should focus on how advances in cultural heritage preservation and accessibility would support humanities research, teaching, or public programming as a whole.

Eligibility: U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, state and local government agencies, Native American tribal governments, and institutes of higher education are eligible to apply.

Grant Period: Funded projects will begin on March 1, 2020. Tier I grants have a grant period of one or two years. Tier II grants have a grant period of up to three years.

Grant Amount: Awards will not exceed $75,000 for Tier I grants. Tier II grants will not exceed $350,000.
