Sustaining Cultural Heritage Collections

Grant Opportunity: The National Endowment for the Humanities' Sustaining Cultural Heritage Collections (SCHC) program provides funds for cultural institutions to tackle contemporary challenges of preserving collections of humanities materials through sustainable and preventative conservation methods. Projects should be institution-specific and be guided by interdisciplinary collaboration. 
Grants are awarded in two categories: 

  • Planning grants support the development and assessment of sustainable preventive conservation strategies. Projects in this category must be informed by an existing preservation or collection management plan and must focus on exploring sustainable preventive conservation strategies.
  • Implementation grants support the implementation of a preventive conservation project that is specific to the needs of the institution and its collections. 

Eligibility: Any U.S. nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, state and local governmental agencies and federally recognized Indian tribal governments are eligible to apply. 

Grant Amount: The maximum award amount in the planning grant category is $50,000. Awards in the implementation category are, at maximum, $350,000.

Grant Period: Planning grants have a maximum grant period of two years. Implementation grants have a maximum grant period of five years.
