Museums Empowered Grant to Fund Professional Development Opportunities in Museums

Grant Opportunity: The Museums Empowered: Professional Development Opportunities for Museum Staff grant program is administered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services as part of their Museums for America Initiative. This grant funds projects that improve the ability of an individual museum to serve its public and create systemic change through professional development activities for staff. 
Grants are awarded in the following four categories: 

  • Digital Technology grants fund projects that allow staff to fully explore, understand, adopt, and optimize the use of digital technology in museums. 
  • Diversity and Inclusion grants fund projects that increase museum staff's ability to develop cultural competency and support museum relevancy in their communities. 
  • Evaluation grants fund projects that expand museum staff’s capacity in conducting evaluations of programs, practices, and products. 
  • Organizational Management grants fund projects that allow museum staff to learn best practices in organizational management, strategic thinking, innovation, and managing change. 

Eligibility: Private or governmental (State, local, or tribal) nonprofit museums located in the United States or United States Territories are eligible to apply. Applicants must employ at least one staff member, or the full-time equivalent, whether paid or unpaid, and exhibit objects to the general public at least 120 days a year. 

Grant Amount: The award for this grant is between $5,000 and $250,000 with an average award of $150,000.

Grant Period: The grant period for the Museums Empowered Grant is one to three years with projects beginning September 1, 2020.
