Grant opportunity: The National Science Foundation (NSF)’s Fire Science Innovations through Research and Education (FIRE) grant program provides funding for partnerships that advance scientific research and education to transform our understanding of wildfires.

FIRE accepts proposals in one or more of the following areas:

  • Next Generation Coupled Fire Models (FIRE-MODEL): FIRE-MODEL grants will support the development or improvement of models, methods, and algorithms for fire and smoke dynamics, or incorporation of underlying processes to forecast future wildfires.

  • Enhancing Capacity for Fire Resilience in the Wildland-Urban Interface (FIRE-WUI): FIRE-WUI grants support research into potential human-fire interactions with a goal of informing risk management and response and adaption across infrastructures.

  • Fire Science Innovations through Research and Education (FIRE) Networks (FIRE-NET): FIRE-NET grants will support projects that develop new interdisciplinary collaborations and synthesize aspects of wildfire science.

Eligibility: All organization types listed in the NSF’s Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide are eligible to apply. This includes institutions of higher education, nonprofit and nonacademic organizations, and units of tribal government.

Grant Amount and Grant Period: Requested budgets should be commensurate with the proposed scope. The maximum grant period is typically five years.
