Grant opportunity: The New York State Education Department's Charter Schools Program Expansion Grant provides funding for the expansion of the number of seats in charter schools that are already providing high-quality educational opportunities to traditionally underserved communities.
Eligibility: Eligible applicants include existing charter school education corporations authorized by the New York State Board of Regents, the Buffalo Board of Education, the New York City Department of Education, or the State University of New York that have had their charter renewed at least once.
Grant Amount and Grant Period: Applicants can apply for a base award of $1,500,000 over a three-year grant period. An additional $500,000 can also be requested for a total of $2,000,000 if the applicant can demonstrate it meets one or more of the following criteria:
- The school is specifically designed to meet the learning needs and raise the achievement of students with disabilities or English Language Learners
- The school is a high school whose mission is specific to the needs of over-age and undercredited students
- The school will serve students who are at-risk of academic failure because they reside in a community that is served by a persistently low-achieving school
- The school will provide a distinctive educational option for students in rural communities with limited educational options
- The school’s program will promote racial, ethnic, and linguistic diversity
