Funding for New Charter Schools

Grant opportunity: To expand opportunities for all students to attend high-quality charter schools, the New York State Education Department's Charter Schools Programs (CSP) Start-Up Grants program provides funding to new charter schools for planning, program design, and initial implementation. 

Activities this funding can be used for include: 

  • Professional development for teachers, school leaders, and specialized instructional support personnel
  • Hiring and compensating teachers, school leaders, and specialized instructional support personnel
  • Acquiring or developing supplies, training, equipment, and educational materials
  • Carrying out necessary renovations and minor repairs for a new school building to meet regulations
  • One-time, start-up costs to provide transportation for students
  • Community engagement activities
  • Other appropriate, non-sustained costs related to opening and preparing for the operation of a new charter school when such costs cannot be met from other source

Eligibility:  Eligible applicants include existing charter school education corporations authorized by the New York State Board of Regents or the SUNY Board of Trustees. 

Grant Amount and Grant Period: The grant amount is $12,000,000 for a three-year grant period.

  • Applications Due: September 18, 2026
