Funding to Develop the Infrastructure to Broaden STEM Participation

Grant opportunity: The National Science Foundation Eddie Bernice Johnson Inclusion across the Nation of Communities of Learners of Underrepresented Discoverers in Engineering and Science (INCLUDES) initiative supports projects that implement collaborative, systemic, and inclusive changes to infrastructure that broaden participation in the STEM fields and grow the new generation in the STEM workforce. 

Proposals are accepted in the following categories: 

  • Design & Development Launch Pilots (DDLPs) will identify a specific challenge to broadening participation in STEM while also testing and delivering models that enable new collaborative efforts or new approaches to broaden participation in STEM. 
  • Collaborative Change Consortia projects will build the multisector infrastructure needed to foster collaboration, contribute innovative research to the knowledge base about broadening STEM participation, and, overall, broaden participation in STEM at city, state, or regional levels.  
  • Alliance projects will build the large-scale infrastructure needed to foster collaboration, contribute innovative research to the knowledge base about broadening STEM participation, and, overall, broaden participation in STEM on a national level. 
  • Network Connector projects will initiate or maintain connections to the INCLUDES National Network for projects or partnerships that are not currently funded by INCLUDES. 
  • Conference projects provide platforms for new collaborations or exchange of ideas that strengthen the INCLUDES National Network.

Eligibility:  Eligible applicants include institutions of higher education, nonprofit non-academic organizations, for-profit organizations, units of state or local government, or tribal nations. 

Grant Amount and Grant Period: The grant amounts and grant periods are as follows: 

  • DDLP grants are a maximum of $300,000 per year with a grant period of two years. 
  • Collaborative Change Consortia grants are a maximum of $1 million per year with a grant period of five years.
  • Alliance grants are a maximum of $2 million per year with a grant period of five years. 
  • Network Connector grants are a maximum of $250,000 per year with a grant period of two years. 
  • Conference grants are a maximum of $100,000 with a one year grant period.
