With school buildings closed throughout New York State for the remainder of the 2019-2020 academic year, students, teachers, families, and administrators are settling into online learning. However, many students struggle accessing online education. In the Rochester City School District, reports show that over 50% of high-school aged students lack reliable internet access at home. For elementary-aged students, their access to computers is often limited with family computers shared with parents now working from home.
To address these challenges, the Rochester Area Community Foundation is distributing grant money to school districts in the 8-county area around Rochester, New York. Awards from the Covid-19 Education Fund will be used to assist districts in purchasing and distributing computers and tablets to keep students engaged in learning during this time of social distancing and online education. Applications will be accepted beginning this week.
The foundation has a full list of free resources available on their new COVID-19 Resource page.
