Growing Convergence Research (GCR)

The National Science Foundation announced their GCR program targeting multidisciplinary teams who are embracing convergence research as a means of developing highly innovative solutions to complex research problems. Proposals submitted to this solicitation are expected to explore novel avenues not previously investigated that are at the forefront of advancing science through deep integration. Proposals must also make a convincing case that the research to be conducted cannot be supported by other NSF programs and solicitations, innovates at interdisciplinary intersections beyond existing approaches, and has potential to transform foundational scientific understanding. 

Funding: 

(1) Phase I, Years 1-2: $1,200,000

(2) Phase II, Years 3-5: $2,400,000

Eligibility: 

(1) Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs): Two- and four-year (including community colleges). Special Instructions for International Branch Campuses of US IHEs: If the proposal includes funding to be provided to an international branch campus of a US institution of higher education (including through use of subawards and consultant arrangements), the proposer must explain the benefit(s) to the project of performance at the international branch campus, and justify why the project activities cannot be performed at the US campus.

(2) Non-profit, non-academic organizations: Independent museums, observatories, research laboratories, professional societies and similar organizations located in the U.S. that are directly associated with educational or research activities.
