National Science Foundation to Provide Grants to Support STEM Higher Education at HBCUs

Grant Opportunity: The National Science Foundation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Program (HBCU-UP) aims to broaden the participation in the U.S. science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce by enhancing the quality of STEM undergraduate education in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Proposals can be submitted in the following categories:

  • Targeted Infusion Projects are short-term projects that aim to increase the knowledge base in STEM education through research, evaluation or a combination thereof.
  • Broadening Participation Research in STEM Education Projects will investigate topics that impact the recruitment, retention, and success of African Americans in STEM education and the workforce.
  • Research Initiation Projects are scientific research projects by a STEM faculty member at the applying HBCU.
  • Implementation Projects will design, implement, study, and assess institutional initiatives and models to increase the numbers of students pursuing STEM degrees and the quality of their education.
  • Broadening Participation Research Centers Projects will build the intellectual infrastructure to facilitate the creation, integration, and transfer of new knowledge in broadening participation research.

Eligibility: Accredited HBCUs that offer undergraduate degree programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields are eligible to apply. Those submitting proposals in the Broadening Participation Research Center grant track must have had been awarded at least three previous Implementation or ACE Implementation Projects in the past.

Grant Amount and Grant Period: The award amounts and project periods are as follows:

  • Targeted Infusion Projects: $400,000 for two to three years
  • Broadening Participation Research in STEM Education Projects: $350,000 for up to three years
  • Research Initiation Projects: $300,000 for up to three years
  • Implementation Projects: Up to $1.25 million for 1st round Implementation Projects, up to $2.25 million for 2nd and 3rd round Implementation Projects for a maximum of  five years
  • Broadening Participation Research Centers Projects: $9 million for a maximum of five years

  • Letter of Intent Due for Research Initiation Projects: July 27, 2021
  • Letter of Intent Due for Targeted Infusion Projects, Broadening Participation Research Projects, Implementation Projects, ACE Implementation Projects: September 14, 2021
  • Full Proposal Deadline for  Targeted Infusion Projects, Broadening Participation Research Projects, Implementation Projects, ACE Implementation Projects: November 11, 2021
  • Preliminary Proposal Due for Broadening Participation Research Centers Projects: March 22, 2022
  • Full Proposal Deadline for Broadening Participation Research Centers Projects: November 22, 2022
